Mike and Maria, both former residents of Summit, NJ followed their "call by God" to move to Newark in 1986. They began to pioneer a work for Young Life Newark, reaching High School and Junior High youth and their families with the message of love of Jesus Christ. The ministry has grown from Weequahic High School and surrounding community to include 8 staff and 30 volunteers serving High Schools and Middle Schools in 3 out of the 5 Wards in the City of Newark and the cities of East Orange and West Orange. They also work with the Essex County Juvenile Detention Facility in Newark. Over the past 17 years, they have been privileged to reach over 8,000 youth! Six years ago, they were able to purchase a building at 272 Chancellor Avenue, which now serves as the Young Life Community Outreach Center and which provides a physical location for teens to gather. They now serve over 40 kids a night through tutoring, Bible study, fashion show/drama preparation, Club, Camping and the Entrepreneurial and Leadership Institute. Michael and Maria are grateful for the support of PCNP for the past 16 years which has helped them to reach the young people of Newark with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ.
